Picross S Review (Nintendo Switch)

10/02/2017

Picross. The bane of my existence. This puzzle series has had me more frustrated and relieved than any other. I was unbelievably excited when I heard this game was announced and at an amazing price of $7.99. Then I heard Golf Story was coming out on the same day and FIFA 18 the day after. I thought to myself 'Is there even any point to getting it?' but boy was I wrong. THIS GAME HAS CONSUMED ME.

Golf Story was a game I've been excited for since it was first announced and I was eagerly anticipating its release. I did not predict that I'd only manage to put 30 minutes into Golf Story before I had to go back to Picross and play another 4 hours of that.

Picross S is just simple puzzle fun, with that compelling hook that gets you to play the next puzzle and then, it never stops. Picross at its simplest is very similar to sudoku but with a picture at the end & involves a lot of brain use. I personally have been playing the game with no assists to push myself to the limit. The frustration has been real but the euphoria of relief after is even better. To those worried about the difficulty, not to worry, there are hints system available and you can adjust them accordingly.

After playing close to 7 hours, I have only managed to make it to puzzle 64 out of the 150 available and that's only the normal Picross mode. There's also Mega Picross, which I haven't had the chance to play yet but plan to after I finish all the normal puzzles. If you're worried about the lack of content at such a low price point, there is no need. You will definitely be getting your bang for your buck.

All in all, Picross S is a brilliant game and the best puzzle game on the Switch so far. At such a great price point, I recommend to this everyone. To most people that like it, you'll definitely get your money's worth. To those who don't, it'll only be $8 down the drain that can go on worse stuff but I guarantee that if you enjoy puzzle games, especially Sudoku, this is a must buy.

(Now let's hope I can stop playing so I can actually get back to Golf Story.)

My score for Picross S on the Nintendo Switch is: 9/10
